The short answer
In California, you cannot apply dark tint across the entire windshield. However, you can apply a clear, non-reflective heat-rejection film over the whole windshield, and you can add a tinted sun strip along the top.
The AS-1 line and sun strips
Most windshields have an “AS-1” marking near the top edge. California allows a tinted sun strip above the AS-1 line (or, if there’s no line, the top 4 inches). This band cuts glare from LA’s harsh afternoon sun without affecting your main field of view.
Clear heat-rejection film
The best legal option for the full windshield is clear ceramic film. It looks virtually invisible, doesn’t darken the glass, and still rejects a huge amount of infrared heat and 99% of UV. You stay compliant and your cabin stays cool.
